Come along on Tuesday 4 April at 7pm at 17 Tory St and have a chance to talk with Jake Conroy, one of the SHAC 7 (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty USA). Jake will talk about his experience of state repression and the US prison system. Jake was one of the members of SHAC imprisoned for several years after campaigning to shut down Huntingdon Life Sciences. Their campaign didn’t involve bombs or arson, rather they campaigned to break the financial ties that Huntingdon had with other corporations. They also ran a website on which they posted news about the campaign — legal actions like protests and illegal actions like stealing animals from labs. They were imprisoned for  'reporting on and encouraging others to engage in legal  demonstrations and supporting the ideology of direct action'.  Open all day from 10am The final day of the Spanish Revolution exhibition at 17 Tory Street, Wellington, concludes with a talk by Mark Derby at 4pm followed by a screening of Ken Loach's ' Land and Freedom '. 4pm: Mark Derby will talk about New Zealanders who went to Spain. Mark’s the author of ‘ Kiwi Compañeros: New Zealand and the Spanish Civil War ’ and ‘ Petals and Bullets. Dorothy Morris: New Zealand Nurse in the Spanish Civil War .’
 Mark’s talk will be followed by a screening of Ken Loach’s ‘ Land and Freedom ’.

Friday 8 July What is Anarchism? Wander in to 17 Tory St at lunchtime: 1 2.30pm  join a discussion about what anarchism is or come in at after work for the film 'Living Utopia'.  6.30pm - film screening: Living Utopia Be inspired by people who lived and worked and showed a different world possible not dominated by capitalism. Living Utopia is a documentary consisting of interviews and talks with 30 anarchist survivors of the Spanish revolution. It includes workers involved in the collectives and members of Free Women of Spain - a truly up-lifting and inspiring way to spend a cold Friday night. At 6pm we have two speakers: Lynn will briefly talk about why the Spanish Revolution still enthuses and inspires her; Lyn is a local anarchist who put together an exhibition for the 75th Anniversary five years ago in Wellington. It's time now to celebrate the 80th Anniversary. Barry Pateman will also speak. Barry has worked with and known many people who were involved with the Spanish Revolution. He spoke 30 years ago at the 50th Anniversary in London and now that he's living in this part of the world, will join us and share ' Some thoughts about why the Spanish Revolution is important to us today'. Barry has done a lot of work over the years on 'clearing the rubble from the garden of history to find the patterns beneath'. Barry is involved with the Kate Sharpley Library (KSL)  - a wonderful resource of anarchist literature and he is also

Prisons - a serious crime This country has one of the highest rates of imprisonment in the world & that statistic doesn't include those serving a non­-prison sentence or waiting for a court appearance. As of 1 st Dec 2014 there were 8,641 people in NZ's prison. That's more than the towns of Foxton, Featherston and Martinborough combined. Of those people in prison, more than half are M āori & a quarter aged under 25. On top of all that, 70% of people imprisoned get another conviction within five years; the justice industry is a revolving system.   We are inviting speakers who have been involved with the prison system to give a short presentation on this theme, followed by general discussion for all. The Trans‐Pacific Partnership Agreement An old agenda in a new wrapper A talk and discussion about the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, an international trade and investment deal currently under negotiation. This has been presented by the government as a huge economic opportunity, but has been criticised as an unprecedented step towards corporate dominance. We'll look at its history, and how it fits in with the New Zealand government's pro-business and anti-democratic policies over the last three decades. We'll also consider the rise and fall of the 'anti-globalisation' movement and how the opposition is shaping up this time around. Those politics have become so mainstream that in Auckland this year uniformed police and prison officers marched at the Pride Parade - there is no pride in that equality, just as there is no pride in the institutions of police and prison. Instead of wanting equality in that world, Against Equality seeks to build connections with other queer movements across the globe for a truly radical social and economic justice movement. Against Equality challenge the equality rhetoric and the demand for inclusion in the institution of marriage and other state institutions such as the military and the prison industrial complex .
