Photo Exhibition - 20th Anniversary: Zapatista Path to 2014

The Wellington Zapatista Support Group are holding a photographic exhibition at Thistle Hall covering 20 years in the construction of Zapatista autonomy. Place: Thistle Gallery , Cnr Cuba and Arthur Street Dates: 27 January – 02 February Opening Hours: 11am – 6pm daily. Launch: 5.30pm Monday 27 January Twenty years ago, on January 1st 1994, the day the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) came into effect, the Zapatistas in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas said “Enough!!” and took a stand against attempts to further dispossess them of their indigenous lands and culture. For the last 20 years they have pursued a peaceful path, constructing from below and to the left a 'world in which many worlds fit'. The exhibition at Thistle Hall features photos of ordinary and extraordinary moments in 20 years of the life of a people under constant military and paramilitary threat, going about the business of survival following a path of patience, dignity, and resistance. Wellington Anarchist Bookfair & Week of Anarchy

The Wellington Anarchist Bookfair will be a day of Anarchist ideas, anarchist books, anarchist pamphlets and zines, anarchist badges and patches, anarchist posters - that is, lots of anarchist paraphernalia and ephemera and the Freedom Shop will be there.  But the Bookfair is more than a Bookfair: a Week of Anarchy begins on Monday 10th March with an introductory discussion on the history of anarchism in this land; the next night features local anarchist community groups; the Wednesday will be individual anarchists talking about their work at a local community level; the Thursday is a talk by anarchist author Michael Schmidt ('BlackFlame' and 'The Cartography of Anarchy'), and Friday will be the opening of the Bookfair. And throughout the week there will be an exhibition of printing, posters, art, magazines, badges and whatever else to portray visually some of the different protest and organising activities that have gone on over the years. Film Screening Postponed

Apologies, but the Zapatista Film Screening for 17 January has been postponed to 14th February . In the meantime, keep an eye on what's on at the Thistle Hall as there is a Zapatista exhibition to be held there in late January.
